Xmas Lunch @ Acciuga

Initially, went Shiroi Mori for lunch on Xmas day since its nearer and i miss their dessert. When we reached there, apparently the cafe is only opened for their log cake orders.  Hence we drove near the base to check if Acciuga is open fro business. Yay! No more searching for other restaurants as my stomach kept growling. Their spaghetti is the best!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas everyone! This is my 1st xmas with Shota, we had never spent it together in person. We went to fire-fighter Xmas gathering. Bao is such a great chef, the turkey was the best i ever tasted. I never like the taste of turkey so at least the couple of times i tried the taste was so-so. But yesterday turkey was DA-Bomb! Thank you Bao!

忘れっぽい夫婦

My 1 year visa is ending soon at next year March. Hence we need to go back Aomori to apply for renewal of visa. 1 month ago, we went to Aomori to check on the procedures and necessary documents to bring and when should be the best time to renew. They advised us to come again in Dec and so we did with all our documents required *at least that's what we thought before leaving the house*

Upon reaching the office, we placed all the documents at the counter including my spouse visa. The officer questioned did you bring along the passport? Suddenly, both of us were frozen on the spot and i exclaimed i didn't bring at all! Both of us had forgotten about the passport! I recalled that the officer did told us a month ago when we went the 1st time. It had totally slipped out of our minds. Driving to Aomori takes about 1hr and toll fee of 800 yen for usage of the highway each time. Therefore for round trip, we need to spend 1600 yen and 2 hrs of driving. What a waste of time and money!

Thankfully my parents in law stayed in Aomori so we can visit them at the same time. Okaasan teasingly said we are 忘れっぽい夫婦 meaning forgetful husband and wife lol! Indeed we are!

4 hidden rules of Japanese people

There is a saying: When in Rome, do what the Romans do. Same concept applies here in Japan. Certain behaviour and mannerism that my husband deem as a norm leaves me scratching my head in puzzlement at times. I am trying to be mindful and alert not to offend others but as you know... old habits die hard so if you ever bump into me in person please do not take offence to it. Anyway i always have a "referee" beside me, ready to blew his whistle and flash his yellow card at me any time.

1)Speed limit VS local speed limit

All of you know what is a speed limit right?! If the sign stated 40km, that means you cannot drive beyond the stated limit isn't it? Not my area....... To locals, it means you have to drive 10km above whatever is stated. So in this instance, they will expect you to drive at 50km. This is a grey zone that traffic police will not penalise you if you drive within the range. Of course in busy streets or main district, it is better to obey the limit but once you are out of safe zone, everyone speed and they expects you to do the same otherwise either you can overtaken constantly or being tail gate.

Newbie driver is no exception!  How nerve wreaking!

2) Agreement is not acceptance

Japanese are terrible in rejections. They will never say no out-rightly to the invitations. They always appear to be agreeing to your plans but as the date approaches... suddenly they go missing before or on that actual day and your messages and calls are not reply, you sure know that you are being rejected and they are not interested in joining your activities. Do not make them feel burden by your numerous confirmation otherwise they might drop you as a friend since you obviously could not read their signs well.

If they are keen, they will contact you again or take initiative to make plans with you instead of merely nodding their head.

3) Home clothes is a major NONO outside

Being a Singaporean, it means you can get away wearing casual clothes in most of occasions. You can wear your tank top with shorts in your slippers or crocs to shopping centre, cafes or even parties. Here if you ever try to do it, they won't frown directly at you but secretly steal glances at you and make remarks in their mind lol!

Recently i tried wearing my home clothes consisted of sweater pants with jacket and crocs since we were be driving 3 mins to the local store. It was just a grab and go back home kind of trip. Shota was frowning at me and asked me to change but i refused. Why make it so troublesome when we are not staying that for long and i was not wearing anything revealing. He was pretty unhappy about it and said it was shameful to wear home outfit outside. DUH!! Chill man!

4) Personal space distance

Be it in a queue or along the aisle in the supermarket, i need to maintain 1 person away space from the person in front of me. The distance should be even greater when the person is paying at the counter and i was waiting behind him. Same applies to their privacy.... Never ask them personal questions like their age, salary etc unless they tell you about it themselves. I have yet to encounter this so far, the Japanese i talked to tend to be more forgiving when speaking to a foreigner i guess. Salary is a nono unless they volunteer the information themselves.

All above is my perception of their behaviour so far, you can take it with a pinch of salt or nod along in agreement. Of course not all Japanese behave that way but majority do in my opinion.

Penguin Chef strikes!

Ever since i had moved to Japan, the people i met be e.g Shota's friends or driving school teachers would strike a conversation with me ending with if i cook. The 1st few times, i did not mind at all and smilingly replied not at all. In fact, my husband is the one that cooks. However as topic continue to bring up by others more, i start to feel quite embarrassed and wonder if its that bad.

Even when my mil and Shota's grandmother was concerned about me not being able to cook since people in countryside cook frequently at home. Shota had to assure them it is 1 of reason he choose me. I'm pretty sure that no other men choose a wife or girlfriend as 1 of criteria that she cannot cook lol! In fact, it would be total opposite!

Now situation is still the same but he had started requesting me to learn from him how to cook basic meals so i will not starve or be in a dilemma when he needs to be away or preparation for our future when we have kids. Imagine telling my kids that Gomen! Have to wait for dad to come back ok? Since your lousy mom can't cook at all. Please eat bread 1st... :p

So far i had whip 2 simple dishes and i do not intend to show it here since its so easy that you will say how dare you show it! Even kids that cook can do it! My fragile heart cannot take such comments now since its a big step for me lol!

Pictures shown below are all cooked by Chef Shota:

Fell into the trap of Japanese products!

Typically whenever anyone think of Japan, we will usually think of their cool and stylish latest technology gadgets, their kawaii items, recommended beauty products etc. My past few vacations in Japan, i was dragging cartons of their food items especially potato chips and beauty care items. I love their supermarket the best as i always feel those gadgets no matter how cool they are, simply was beyond my price range. I love buying small and affordable items thats is pocket friendly though buying a carton of them means almost same price of buy a branded purse lol!

People whom travel to Japan will buy Porter bags, Agnes B, Burberry Black label series etc but not me since i am the frugal type in branded items. Of course i would love to own 1 but i just couldn't bear swiping my credit card or by the time i consider its already too late or i had lost interest in owning it. Hence being here, i am expose to long and wide aisle of products with irresistible packing. Solely just haircare alone, there are over 10- 20 brands! whenever we drop by to drug store, i will always linger around beauty section and reluctantly leave after Shota's persistence calling. Well u know how men works, they will get grumpy and start hurrying you to move along.

There was once i had to persuade Shota to leave me at the drug store for at least 1 hour for me to shop around without his bothersome nagging. That was my happy  *me* time hahaa! I simply love drugstore!!!

No.1 best-seller for 2 years shampoo. Cost $25 sin, didn't know i can become so high maintenance lol!

Another No. 1 bestseller which combines toner, moisturizer for face.  $65 sin.

Reasonable price for yet another best seller hydrating mask useful during winter time! 50 sheets for $23 and its made in Japan.

My recent expensive purchase sobsob! no $$$. $230 sin Panasonic face warmer massage. Yet to use it supposedly to slim down face and it can be use for other areas like neck, stomach, leg.....

Christmas lighting at Misawa!

Christmas is coming! Upcoming there are several places that will have Christmas tree lighting ceremony. They had fireworks as well but we left earlier as both of us could not stand the coldness.

Its was -1 degree, way too cold!! The moment i stepped out the car, how i wish i could go back in again! 4 layers of clothes with snow hat, scarf and snow boots are not enough. Glad we left earlier as due to frozen road and crowd leaving after the fireworks, there was accident happened around the area.

Japanese driving on the road are usually considerate however there are plenty that disregard rules and regulations. There was a car that overtook 2 - 3 cars in 1 move as he was too impatient to drive within speed limit and that's not the 1st time i seen that happened and cars that do not signal when turning or changing lane. Especially elderly drivers or elderly pedestrians, they do not notice their surroundings and often drive or cross the road as they want. Hope that with slippery road conditions in the winter season, all drivers should drive with caution.

So romantic! Shota do you realise, this is the 1st Christmas that we get to be together
