This school has a special request: to conduct cooking class. It was either a choice between chicken rice or laksa. As both ingredients can get easily at the mall including the sauce. In the end, we (S and I) agreed that Chicken Rice is the better choice. Laksa is spicier (kids might not able to take it) and there were certain ingredients kids might be allergic to (like prawns, coconut milk).
I found the recipe for Chicken Rice just using rice cooker and all easy ingredients that typical Japanese family would have. Furthermore, I cooked couple of times to try out the recipe. Of course its nothing like the real Chicken Rice back home but similar (weaker version hahaha).
My class consisted 4th graders to 6th graders, all of them were used to having cooking class. Dividing up work between themselves, few washed the rice, others washed the cutting board etc... Quite astonished as we only start to having cooking lesson from Secondary 1 onward (13 years old).
Only 6th graders were allowed to use the knife to chop the chicken. Turned out to be success! Seemed like everyone liked the taste! They also cooked for 1st graders - 3rd graders, sending the bowls to their classes.
As for the teachers, they also made a small portion and gave it all the teachers in the school.
