Day 5 Onuma Quasi-National Park & Hakodate

For the past few days, i had been constantly checking the weather forecast since i had planned a day to visit the Onuma park, However as the word, park suggested, there would be hardly any shelters if rain occurred. On that morning, it rained and i called the park tourist centre to confirm the weather over there. Luckily, she said it was raining now but in the noon will be cloudy day. So off we go! We took cab to the morning market which was near the JR station and had our breakfast and went to station to buy the tickets.

From Hakodate Station, Onuma Koen Station can be reached in 20 minutes by limited express train (1130 yen by non-reserved seat) or in one hour by local train (530 yen) and they have specific timing so it's better to check the time of departure beforehand otherwise you might need to wait half hr - 1 hour at least.

I had intended to buy local train to the park and limited express train back as local train back was 2 hours later than limited express train. After i brought the tickets and was waiting around, a tawianese jr staff approached me and asked if im going to Onuma. I said yes and she said there's a special train today (it was a sat when we were there) that costed the same as local train (530yen) but took only 20 mins! Yea!! When we were heading back to Hakodate, we took the special train back as well. (You have to ask station staff as it was not listed in the normal time schedule so upon returning, only us board the special train and rest of the Taiwanese tourists were holding on the more expensive train ticket and waiting for the normal limited express train.)

Designated as a "quasi national park" and located only twenty kilometers north of Hakodate, Onuma Park (Onuma Koen) is known for its picturesque, island dotted lakes and majestic dormant volcano, Mount Komagatake.
